Reducing Preoperative Anxiety through Meditation

Preoperative anxiety is associated with a longer length of stay, more opioid use, and less patient satisfaction. Higher levels of pre-operative anxiety have been found to be a predictor of severe postoperative pain and chronic pain after surgery, influencing the successes and quality of a patient’s recovery. Managing anxiety could reduce the negative outcomes that accompany orthopedic surgery. A non-pharmacological intervention to lessen preoperative anxiety of patients in surgical settings fits into the workflow and has the potential to be a scalable, low-cost intervention.

The Buckeye Pause Bundle

High levels of chronic and recurrent workplace stress can profoundly impact the physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being of the Ohio workforce. Therefore, support for mental and physical health resources is needed as well as expansion of wellness programs within organizations exposed to high levels of stress. Acute care hospital settings are organizations exposed to high levels of physical pain and mental stress, which is where we are implementing our wellness interventions to reduce burnout and combat frequent healthcare-related stressors.

We expect the Buckeye Pause Bundle to provide protective mechanisms to support upstream mitigation of chronic stress-related injuries, illnesses, and disabilities. Upon completion, we will have sufficient data to support the technical and commercial viability across the state of Ohio and beyond!

First Responders Grant

High levels of chronic and recurrent workplace stressors can profoundly impact the physical, mental, and emotional health of frontline first responders. Significant downstream consequences of chronic stress may include compromised quality and safety of patient care delivery and detrimental short- and long-term physical/mental health consequences. Thus, pragmatic, proactive, interventions are an important next step to promoting resilience and minimizing the effects of the high mental and physical stress demands of a first responder.

Our goals:

  • improve and sustain the health and wellness of both health care providers and first responders

  • help mitigate and prevent the downstream consequences of chronic stress
